Associated events:

The following associated events took place within the International Flute Competition:

1. International Forum on the Art Of Flute Playing „Flute art in contemporary perspective” taking place at the Academy of Music in Krakow on 6th April 2011. Within the forum, Mr. Gabriel Abratowicz presented a lecture entitled “Flauto traverso in Europe – history and development of construction techniques”.
2. Exhibition of contemporary ADAMS flutes from Netherlands and Mancke headjoints from Germany.
3. Exhibition of historical flutes from the Gabriel Abratowicz’s private collection.
4. Exhibition of posters by prof. Władysław Pluta.

The magnificent opening ceremony of the 5th International Flute Competition Krakow 2011included the ceremony of awarding the “Glory to the art of flute” statuettes designed by prof. Stanisław Hryń and made by Piotr Piszczkiewicz. The statuettes were presented to: Minister of Culture and National Heritage Mr. Bogdan Zdrojewski,, Maestro Krzysztof Penderecki, prof. Barbara Świątek-Żelazna, prof. Stanisław Krawczyński (Rector of the Academy of Music in Krakow), prof. Peter-Lukas Graf (doctor honoris causa at the Academy of Music in Krakow), prof. Andras Adorjan, prof. Petri Alanko, prof. Janos Balint, prof. William Bennett, prof. Elżbieta Gajewska-Gadzina. prof. Jerzy Mrozik, prof. Kazimierz Moszyński, prof. Antoni Wierzbiński, prof. Jacques Zoon, pana Karl-Heinz Schütz, prof. Władysław Pluta, Krzysztof Rymarczyk and Janusz Pater.


Karl-Heinz Schutz honoured the occasion with his presence and gave the opening concert with the Chamber Orchestra of the Academy of Music in Krakow under Stanisław Krawczyński, performing music by J.M. Leclair and W.A. Mozart, enthusiastically received by the audience.

The Competition was composed of three stages.

STAGE 1 - In the first stage the participants performed:
Group A: 1. Georg Philipp Telemann, 12 Fantaisies per il Flauto traverso senza Basso – one fantaisie of choice, 2. Sigfrid Karg‑Elert, Sonata (Appassionata) F sharp minor op. 140,
Group B: one of the following pieces: Luciano Berio, Sequenza I per Flauto solo, Elliot Carter, Scrivo in vento for flute alone, Brian Ferneyhough, Cassandra’s Dream Song, Włodzimierz Kotoński, Bucolica für Flöte solo (no. 3 „Inscriptio“ and no. 4 „Surdis, Auribus“) – Edition Moeck 5441, Karl-Heinz Stockhausen, In Freundschaft für Flöte, Toru Takemitsu, Voice for solo flute, Isang Yun, Etude no. 5 „Allegretto“

STAGE 2 - Each participant had to perform three selected pieces, one from each group: C,D and E. Group C: Eugene Bozza, Image, Pierre Octave Ferroud, Trois piéces pour flûte (no. 3 Toan‑Yan „La Féte du double Cinq”), Paul Hindemith, Acht Stücke, Jacques Ibert, Piéce pour flûte seule, André Jolivet, Cinq Incantations pour flûte seule (IV‑V), Sigfrid Karg‑Elert, Caprice op. 107 no. 30 (Chaconne), Leonardo de Lorenzo, Suite Mythologique op. 38 (no. 3 „Apollo”); Group D: Theobald Böhm, Grande Polonaise op. 16[b], Henri Dutilleux, Sonatine pour flûte et piano, Mikołaj Górecki, Variations for Flute and Piano, André Jolivet, Chant de Linos pour flûte et piano, Krystyna Moszumańska-Nazar, Novelette per flauto e pianoforte [the score of Novelette available at the Competition’s Administrative Office], Paul Taffanel, Fantaisie sur le Freischütz (Opéra de C.M. von Weber); Grupa E: Lowell Liebermann, Sonata op. 23, Bohuslav Martinů, Sonata, Robert Muczynski, Sonata op. 14, Siergiej Prokofiew, Sonata D‑dur op. 94 [exposition without repetition], Carl Reinecke, Sonata „Undine” op. 167, Franz Schubert, Introduction and Variations on “Trockne Blumen” op. 160.

STAGE 3 – FINAL
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Rondo D‑dur KV Anh. 184 and Krzysztof Penderecki, Concerto for Flute and Orchestra

The finalists performed with the Chamber Orchestra of the Academy of Music in Krakow under Maciej Tworek.
