7th International Flute Competition Krakow 2017

91 candidates who filed their applications for the preliminary stage (evaluation of the recordings) came from the following 29 countries: Austria, Belarus, China, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Spain, Netherlands, Israel, Japan, Canada, Kazachstan, Columbia, South Korea, Latvia, Germany, Poland, Russia, Romania, Serbia, Singapore, Slovenia, Taiwan, Turkey, Ukraine, Hungary, Italy.

Associated events:
The following associated events took place within the International Flute Competition:
1. International Forum on the Art of Flute Playing with participation of Ludwik Böhm from Germany, who agreed to deliver a lecture entitled: “Theobald Böhm`s Life in Pictures” took place on 5th of April 2017. The lecture given by Theobald Böhm’s descendant was complemented by flute and piano performances of op. 18 and 31 by Wiesław Suruło (flute) and Monika Gardoń-Preinl.
2. Large exhibition of flutes and headjoints prepared and held by Yamaha Music Europa GmbH. The exhibition covered student, intermediate and professional instruments.
3. Jarmuła Music from Tarnów was in charge of instrument servicing and technical maintenance during the Competition.
4. Opening concert took place on the 2nd of April 2017 a the Krakow Philharmonic Hall. The performers included Katalin Stefula, solo flute, 1st prize winner of the 2nd International Flute Competition Krakow 2002 and Orchestra of the Academy of Music in Krakow under the baton of Stanisław Krawczyński. They played the following programme: “Grand polonaise” op. 16 by Theobald Böhm, Flute concerto by André Jolivet and Symphony no. 41 by W.A. Mozart.
The Competition was carried out in three stages.
STAGE 1 - In the first stage the participants performed two pieces from Group A, both to be played by heart and one from Group B
Group A: Georg Philipp Telemann, one fantasia from 12 Fantaisies per il Flauto traverso senza Basso and Sigfrid Karg Elert, Caprice op. 107 nr 30 (Chaconne)
Group B: one of the following pieces: Luciano Berio, Sequenza I per Flauto solo, Elliot Carter, Scrivo in vento for flute alone, Brian Ferneyhough, Cassandra’s Dream Song, Włodzimierz Kotoński, Bucolica für Flöte solo (no. 3 „Inscriptio“ and no. 4 „Surdis Auribus“) – Edition Moeck 5441, Krzysztof Meyer, Burlesca all’Ongarese für Flöte solo – Musikverlag Hans Sikorski GmbH & Co. KG, Hamburg, Karl-Heinz Stockhausen, In Freundschaft für Flöte, Toru Takemitsu, Voice for solo flute, Isang Yun, Etiuda nr 5 „Allegretto“
STAGE 2 - Each Participant was obliged to perform three pieces of their choice, one from each of the groups C,D and E:
Group C: Eugene Bozza, Image, Pierre Octave Ferroud, Trois piéces pour flûte (no. 3 Toan Yan „La Féte du double Cinq”), Paul Hindemith, Acht Stücke, André Jolivet, Cinq Incantations pour flûte seule (IV V), Sigfrid Karg Elert, Sonata (Appassionata) F-sharp minor op. 140, Leonardo de Lorenzo, Suite Mythologique op. 38 (no. 3 „Apollo”);
Group D: Theobald Böhm, Grande Polonaise op. 16[b], Henri Dutilleux, Sonatine pour flûte et piano, Mikołaj Górecki, Variations for Flute and Piano – Polskie Wydawnictwo Muzyczne SA, André Jolivet, Chant de Linos pour flûte et piano, Krystyna Moszumańska-Nazar, Novelette per flauto e pianoforte – Wydawnictwo Akademii Muzycznej w Krakowie, Paul Taffanel, Fantaisie sur le Freischütz (Opéra de C.M. von Weber);
Grupa E: Lowell Liebermann, Sonata op. 23, Bohuslav Martinu, Sonata, Robert Muczynski, Sonata op. 14, Siergiej Prokofiew, Sonata in D major op. 94 [no repetition in the 1st movement], Franz Schubert, Introduction, theme and variations in e minor op. 160 „Trockne Blumen” from „Die schöne Müllerin”, Erwin Schulhoff, Sonata for Flute and Pianoforte. Performers had the freedom to choose the order.
STAGE 3 – FINAL
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Concerto in G major KV313, 1st movement with cadenza to be played by heart and Krzysztof Penderecki, Concerto for Flute and Orchestra
The finalists performed with the Chamber Orchestra of the Academy of Music in Krakow under Maciej Tworek.
