59 candidates who filed their applications for the preliminary stage (evaluation of the recordings) came from the following countries: Algeria, England, Australia, Austria, Bulgaria, China, Croatia, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Greece, Spain, Japan, Canada, South Korea, Germany, Poland, Russia, Switzerland, Sweden, Taiwan, Turkey, Ukraine, USA, Venezuela, USA, Hungary, Italy.

Associated events:

The following associated events took place within the International Flute Competition:

1. International Forum on the Art of Flute Playing with participation of Rachel Brown from United Kingdom, an outstanding flutist and expert in interpretations of baroque music who agreed to deliver a lecture entitled: Telemann Fantasias: a feat of ingenuity and inspiration took place on 9th of April 2014.
2. Large exhibition of flutes and headjoints including latest models, prepared and held by Yamaha Music Europa GmbH.
3. Mr. Andrzej Jarmuła from Tarnów was in charge of instrument servicing and maintenance during the Competion.

The opening ceremony of the 6th International Flute Competition Krakow 2014 covered great performances given by Andrzej Krzyżanowski, Agata Kucz and Wioletta Strączek, flutists and graduates of the Academy of Music in Krakow, prize-winners of the previous editions of the International Flute Competition in Krakow. They were accompanied by Monika Gardoń-Preinl on the piano.



The Competition was composed of three stages.

STAGE 1 - In the first stage the participants performed:
Group A: 1. One chosen Fantaisie from: Georg Philipp Telemann, 12 Fantaisies per il Flauto traverso senza Basso.2. Sigfrid Karg Elert, Sonata (Appassionata) in F sharp minor, op. 140 Both positions above were compulsory and had to be performed by heart..Group B: One of the folllowing: Luciano Berio, Sequenza I per flauto solo, Elliot Carter, Scrivo in vento for flute alone, Brian Ferneyhough, Cassandra’s Dream Song, Włodzimierz Kotoński, Bucolica für Flöte solo (no. 3 “Inscriptio”and no. 4 “Surdis Auribus”) – Edition Moeck 5441, Krzysztof Meyer, Burlesca all’Ongarese für Flöte solo – Musikverla Hans Sikorski GmbH & Co. KG, Hamburg, Karl-Heinz Stockhausen, In Freundschaft für Flöte, Toru Takemitsu, Voice for solo flute, Isang Yun, Etude no. 5 “Allegretto”

STAGE 2 - Each Participant was obliged to perform three pieces of their choice, one from each of the groups: C, D and E. Group C: Eugene Bozza, Image, Pierre Octave Ferroud, Trois piéces pour flute (no. 3 Toan Yan“La Féte du double Cinq”), Paul Hindemith, Acht Stücke, Jacques Ibert, Piéce pour flute seule, André Jolivet, Cinq Incantations pour flute seule (IV V), Sigfrid Karg Elert, Caprice op. 107 no. 30 (Chaconne), Leonardo de Lorenzo, Suite Mythologique op. 38 (no. 3 Apollo). Group D: Theobald Böhm, Grande Polonaise op. 16[b], Henri Dutilleux, Sonatine pour flute et piano, Mikołaj Górecki, Variations for flute and piano, André Jolivet, Chant de Linos pour flute et piano, Krystyna Moszumańska-Nazar, Novelette per flauto e pianoforte (Academy of Music in Kraków Edition), Paul Taffanel, Fantaisie sur le Freischütz (Opéra de C.M. Von Weber). Group E: Lowell Liebermann, Sonata op. 23. Bohuslav Martinů, Sonata, Robert Muczynski, Sonata op. 14, Sergey Prokofieff, Sonata in D Major op. 94 [exposition without repetition], Carl Reinecke, Sonata “Undine” op. 167, Franz Schubert, Introduction, Theme and Variations in E minor op. 160 “Trockne Blumen” from “Die Schöne Müllerin”.

STAGE 3 – FINAL
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Rondo in D Major KV Anh. 184 and Krzysztof Penderecki, Concerto for Flute and Orchestra

The finalists performed with the Chamber Orchestra of the Academy of Music in Krakow under Maciej Tworek.
